Christmas Prague: Where to see Prague’s Christmas trees

Just like every year Prague’s city districts are beautifully decorated with Christmas trees. When we say Prague’s Christmas tree, almost everyone remembers the one on the Old Town Square together with traditional Christmas markets and a cup of mulled red wine.

A visit to the markets and a shinning tree is a traditional part of advent time. Although in most places there are no markets this year, you can soak up the Christmas atmosphere by the beautifully lit Christmas trees in Prague. Did you know that there are several dozens of them? Let’s see together where you can find Christmas trees in Prague.

The most famous Prague Christmas tree is always the one on the Old Town Square (Staromestske namesti). This year, it was unconventionally lit on secretly on Friday evening, November 27, during a technical test, after which it remained lit permanently. The traditional lighting ceremony, which is attended by a large number of people every year, could be enjoyed at least online. The 17.5 m high Norway spruce came here from Kamenny Privoz and is decorated with a Christmas chain with total length of 6 km, 40 stars, 300 Christmas balls and a 3 m high tree top. It shines in the color of the national tricolor, which symbolizes the appeal for society  unification and 100th anniversary of the establishment of official state symbols incl. national flag. This year, instead of the traditional Christmas markets, it is newly accompanied by the Christmas-decorated Marian Column, which was returned to the Old Town Square in June after more than 101 years.
